Here is another Random PuG story with a "what should I have done?" at the end.
So, I'm a lvl 72 shadow priest and I'm pugging Sethhek Halls because there is an off-hand in there that I want. We are doing OK with a warrior tank who is charging ahead of the thirsty clothies, including the healer, but oh well, they do that, not gonna bust a Q key over it.
Well, heals ditches the pug right in the middle of a very hot fight. Not disco, not AFK--left party. Asshat. Whatever. Mass Dispel Q. Anyway, by some miracle involving Psychic Scream and mah leetle frend, the shadowfiend, I survive, along with one other person. Rez happens, the tank puts us back in the queue for heals, then he turns around and asks me to heal in the interim.
Whut?
I'm all purple and translucent and shadowy. I am not the healer you are looking for. I have, in fact, taken all the heals off my keybinds because I take the Facemelt Your Way To Health approach to questing and I've not been asked to heal since Zul'Farrak. I tell them this and they ask me so swap out my bar with a heals bar.
Whut?
Now, I recently put Prayer of Mending into a convenient place because I can put that on before a fight and let it activate on its own, but I have to search for the Renew and forget the rest. I can vaguely identify the heals icons because they are the red and gold ones
without the skulls, but I would have to tool-tip them all to find out what they do, any I can't exactly do that and try and keep a tank alive. I don't even use my heals on myself because if I get to the point that I need to use them, I'm going to die anyway. They are small and slow and I'm better off popping a pot or going bubble-and-bandage. They ask me to heal and I tell them no. In fact, there was one point towards the end that I was accidentally rather rude about it, so I'm glad that person was from another server.
But my question is, should I have been expected to heal at all? I don't have a problem helping out the main healer if they ask me too, but does asking me to be The Healer even make sense? I'm particularly wondering if Balance druids and Elemental shamans get asked to heal in situations like that. I'm not selfish or a prima donna. I'm willing to reacquaint myself with my heal icons a bit if that is a reasonable expectation, but healing knocks me out of shadow form which makes me a lot more vulnerable to damage and it costs mana to get back into it. I could stay out of shadow, but even then, from my perspective, they haven't gained a healer, they've lost a DPS.
My priestly contribution to team health is Vampiric Embrace and the fact that up to 50% of my damage is going out as HOT (which causes real challenges when it comes to aggro management because I'm generating more threat that my Recount score would suggest, but that's a different Help Me post.) The fine folks at shadowpriest.com would probably tell me to hold fast to my Facemelter identity, but I'd like a more diverse opinion in this case.
EDIT: Just to reiterate, we were in no immediate danger at the point I was asked to heal. They just wanted me to heal rather than wait for another healer out of the queue. Also, in my own defense, I am new to the game, this is my very first toon, and yes I do plan to learn my class but I can't learn it all at once. Right now I'm still trying to work OMG Flail and Button Mash out of my spell rotation. I'm getting to be a decent shadow priest, I've got plans to learn Disc. I'm just new to the game altogether and am trying to figure out what is expected of me as a shadow priest. Now that I know better, I will be reorganizing my bars (again!) and trying to grow a third eye so I can watch my cast bars, Omen, and other people's health bars all at the same time.
EDIT 2: I would never, ever, EVER enter a queue as heals.
